HERCULES CHACONA, 88 Candy maker, teacher
Hercules G. Chacona, 88, died Monday, May 29, 1995, at ForestView Health Care Center. He was born in Erie Sept. 4, 1906, son of the late George P. and Anna Nickles Chacona. A 1924 graduate of Central High School, Mr. Chacona worked in his family's business, Chacona's Candies, and was a noted confectioner for almost five decades. Later in his career he was a national instructor in candy-making classes for the American Retail Confectioners Association. In high school he was on the yearbook staff and lettered in baseball, basketball, track and football. As an adult he played semipro baseball and basketball in Erie. He enjoyed golf and riding horses. Mr. Chacona was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the 32nd Medical Battallion in the Panama Canal Zone. He was a member of VFW Post 470. Active in the Masons and Shriners, he was a drummer in the Pipes and Drums for almost 50 years. He belonged to Tyrian Lodge 362, F and AM, Lodge Council Chapter Consistory, Scottish Rite, Valley of Erie, and Zem Zem Temple Shrine. He served two terms as president of Commodore Perry Chapter 107 of the Order of AHEPA, a Greek-American fraternal organization. He was a past president of the Tzintsina Society, an organization of the descendants of his parents' home village in Sparta, Greece. He also was a member of Omicron chapter of Alpha Gamma Sigma fraternity. He was preceded in death by his wife, Janet Stathakis Chacona; a brother, Pano George Chacona; and four sisters, Amelia Kokoros, Agnes Chacona, Aphrodite Constant and Esmine "Minnie" Gotsie. Survivors include a daughter, Marica Chacona of Brooklyn, N.Y.; a son, John Chacona of Erie; four sisters, Joan Floros, Terpsichore "Tessie" Chacona, Caleroy "Loy" Chacona and Artemis Dodson, all of Erie; two brothers, L. George Chacona of Atlanta, Ga., and James G. Chacona of Sonora, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews. Friends may call at Dusckas Funeral Home West, 536 W. 10th St., Wednesday from 2 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m., and may attend a service at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 4376 West Lake Road, Thursday at 2 p.m. Tyrian Lodge 362 will conduct a service at the funeral home Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., followed by a Trisagion service at 8 p.m. Burial will be at Laurel Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital for Crippled Children, 1645 W. 8th St., Erie, Pa. 16505; to the Tzintsina Society, 20 Jackson Ave., Lakewood, N.Y., or to the charity of one's choice.
