Washington was always there to help others
A Madison County woman known for coming to the aid of family and friends was doing just that Sunday morning.
Victoria "Vickey" Washington, 54, was headed to West Palm Beach, Fla., to help take care of her brother, who was ill, and his wife, who was going through surgery, family members said yesterday.
"She was willing to help anyone," said Joseph Hays of Brandenburg, a cousin.
Washington's mother-in-law, Tamara Mason of Georgia, agreed: "If anybody needed anything or needed help in any way, she was there."
Originally from Breckenridge County, Washington served eight years in the Army and 12 years in the Navy, Mason said.
While she was in the Navy, she met and married J.T. Washington. Both retired from the Navy in 1995 after serving in Guam and moved to Kentucky, living first in Owensboro and then in Richmond, Mason said.
When Hays was taking care of their grandmother in Owensboro, Washington often came to assist him, he said.
"She was always a giving person," Hays said.
Family members also describe Washington as an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan.
She and her husband were planning to become foster parents, Mason said.
"Everybody is going to miss her," Mason said.
