Horatio McPherson Dall was a member of Weston's Battalion, Captain Walter's Company Zarvona Zouaves, C.S.A. in early 1861. He enlisted in Co. B, 21st Virginia Infantry, C.S.A. on May 23, 1861. In July 1861 he requested a transfer but was present for duty in November & December 1861. When that unit mustered out of service in May 1862, Dall enlisted in the 1st Regiment Maryland Cavalry, C.S.A. on August 4, 1862. He was present for duty every month of his enlistment & his hospital bed sheet is blank & shows he was never treated for any wounds or illnesses.
Dall was captured at Hanover, Virginia on March 13, 1865 & held at the military prison camp at Camp Hamilton, Virginia. He was later transferred to Point Lookout Prison Camp, Maryland where he was released on June 11, 1865. On that date he signed the Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. On the oath, Horatio Mc. Dall states that he resides in Frederick, Maryland. He was 5'5" tall with a light complexion, brown hair & blue eyes.
After the war he moved to Baltimore where he worked as a bookkeeper in 1890. He lived with his sister & brother-in-law, DeWitt & Eliza Dall Johnson in 1900.
