Henry C. Beard, a prominent resident of the county, died between 11 and 12 o'clock Sunday night at the residence of his daughter, Mrs Irvin R. Grimm, at Cearfoss, of heart trouble after an illness of a month, aged 75 years. He had complaining for a year and recently recovered from an attack of pneumonia. He had been in critical condition for some time. Mr. Beard was born at Beard's Church, near Chewsville, in 1831, and was the son of Nicholas Beard, an extensive farm owner of that locality. He was engaged in farming at and near Chewsville and Cavetown and in Franklin County and in the 80's he farmed the home place for ten years. He, formerly conducted a mill in Franklin County and was postmaster at Chewsville for three years under President Lincoln.

Mr. Beard was one of the first teachers at Chewsville under the free school system. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran church and a republican in politics. He read a great deal and possessed a fund of general information. He was a man of probity and highly respected by all who knew him and he lived a useful and exemplary life.

In 1854, he married Miss Maria Ann Powers, daughter of John Powers, who was proprietor of the Willow Grove Mills, near Chewsville. She died in 1888. The surviving children are: Mrs. Irvin R. Grimm, Cearfoss; Howard B., Ripley, Oklahoma; Lewis C., a merchant, Milledgeville, Ill.; W. Powers Beard, merchant, W. Washington St., J. Oscar Beard, superintendent of the electric light plant and Leslie C. Beard, a well known newspaper man, all of this city; Charles N. Beard, Charles Town, W. Va. He has two sisters, Mrs. William Hanes, Chewsville, and Mrs. Daniel H. Garver, Hagerstown, and a brother, Jno. W. Beard, Chewsville.
