Verna Mae Barker Frisk
Birth: Sep. 30, 1916
El Centro
Imperial County
California, USA
Death: Aug. 23, 1977
Craighead County
Arkansas, USA

Verna Mae Barker Frisk passed away 23 Aug 1977 after a short battle with Lung Cancer in Jonesboro, Craighead, Arkansas. She was born to Richard Polk Barker and Laura Ella McGahey Barker on September 30, 1916 in El Centro, California.

She met Ray Edward Frisk in Buttonwillow, Kern, California where she lived as a teen, marrying about a year later on June 5,1933 in Calabasas, Los Angeles, California. They lived in Tarzana in the early years of their marriage, where Ray worked for Adohr Farms. When her oldest son was young she worked at a Café, which was popular with the "young" Hollywood. Some of the baby sitters for her son were Doris Day and Ann Sheridan. In 1945 Adohr Farms moved to Camarillo, Ventura, California, now having three children she was a full time Mom, also a Sunday School Teacher at Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, and a Cub Scout Den Mother, after the birth of her fourth child. In the early 1950's she went to work at Camarillo State Hospital becoming a well respected Psychiatric Technician and was very active in the CSEA.

Verna was a very multi talented person. After the move to Camarillo, she grew her own garden and canned, as well as raised chickens for the fresh eggs and Sunday dinners, also made pottery. She could see a dress she liked and then go home and cut a pattern out of newspaper and sew the exact dress, also sewing much of her children's clothes until she began working. Her youngest daughter saw a demo dress one day in a Sears fabric department and wanted one like it, so she bought the material, made her own pattern and made the dress for that daughters 8th Grade Graduation. For her oldest daughters wedding she made her daughters wedding gown with a lot of lace work, it was a very beautiful gown. She also made her own dresses for her Children's weddings, as well as the bridesmaids dresses for three of the weddings. She had a natural soprano singing voice (singing around the house often) and sang at many functions, until thyroid surgery ruined her voice. She could also pick up or sit at any musical interment and after a couple of minutes could play a song, with few errors. She also loved to dance.

In 1967 Ray retired from Adohr Farms and Verna left her job at Camarillo State Hospital, moving to the Walnut Ridge area in Arkansas having bought land and began farming, not realizing how'd they miss their children and grandchildren. Not long after the move she began making Wedding, Anniversary and Birthday Cakes for sale, doing a fairly good business. After about 8 years, they bought a home moving to Jonesboro with Ray leasing out his land and Verna went to work at the State Hospital in Jonesboro, at that time she sold Tri-Chem teaching people how to paint and shade with it, until she became too ill with the cancer that took her home to Our Lord.

Verna is survived by her husband of 44 years Ray Edward Frisk of Jonesboro, Arkansas, son James Ray Frisk (Marge)of Camarillo, California, his children Alice Lynn Frisk, Charlene Rae Frisk and Mark James Frisk of Yreka, California, son John Franklin Frisk (Becky) and his children David Wesley Frisk and Sabrina Diane Frisk of Jonesboro, Arkansas, daughter Dawna Lynn Rape and her children Loy Lynnette Rape and Ray Emil Rape of Jonesboro, Arkansas, daughter Waneta Loy Peterson (Jim)and their children William Joe Peterson and Cheryl Lynn Peterson of Helena, Montana. Brothers Ben E. Barker (Vera) of Loomis, California, Hollis R. Barker of Brewster, Washington and August E. Barker of Bakersfield, California, sisters Willie Maud Dekens (Sarhas) of Blythe, California and Eva Lee Bates of Scottsdale, Arizona, as well as many brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends to mention.

She is preceded in death by her parents, and older brother Houston A. Barker, her kid brother Roy L.(aka;John) Barker who was a fighter pilot killed in action over Germany during WWII, and two Grandsons, Rodney Franklin "Baby" Peterson and James Allen "Little Jimmy" Peterson.

Viewing was held Aug. 24th with a Funeral Service on 25 Aug 1977 in Jonesboro, Arkansas and then a viewing Aug 26 at Griffen Brothers Funeral Home Camarillo, with graveside service and burial Aug 27, 1977 at Conejo Mountain Memorial Park, Camarillo, Ventura, California.
