Married to Rachel Gallaher on November 13, 1817 in Virginia.
Ruby Jones Toliver reported that James and Rachel came to Indiana in 1817, settling at the south end of Peggy Hollow. Legend has it that James had a grist mill on Lost River near where Buck Creek empties into Lost River, and this mill was destroyed by a flood.
Ruby Jones Toliver reported that James was a veteran of the war of 1812, and was given a land grant by President Pierce.
Wendy Henry reported that James Jones was inspector in Columbia Township in 1829, before Lost River Township was formed. Lost River Township was formed in 1853. The first meeting took place in the home of Rhoda Hawkins. The minutes of the meeting, written on June 8, 1853, report that James Jones was elected township trustee.
