INTERLACHEN - Lawrence I. "Larry" Pifer, 89, of Interlachen died Monday, Jan. 30, 2012, at his home, after a short illness.

He was a native of Reynoldsville, and lived in Interlachen since 1989, coming from Woodland.

He retired after 20 years as a tech sergeant with the U.S. Air Force, having served in World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War.

He was a prisoner of war from March 1944 to May 1945 and was part of the Black March of Germany.

He was a Purple Heart recipient and was a life member of the American Ex-Prisoners of War Association, the Disabled American Veterans, the Air Force Sergeants Association, the 95th Bomber Group and the Purple Heart Association.

He also retired after 10 years with the U.S. Post Office.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Leona Maxine Pifer of Interlachen; a sister, Helen Snyder of Niagara Falls, N.Y.; a daughter-in-law, Anna Pifer of Lewisburg, Tenn.; four grandchildren, Tammy Pifer Webber, Debra Pifer Johnston, Laura Pifer Coates and Lawrence A. Pifer; and nine great-grandchildren, Marissa and Haley McKendrick, Brooklyn and Albert Stephenson, Ashlyn McCreadie, Landon and Braydon Coates, and Tyler and Madilyn Johnston.

He was preceded in death by a son, Lawrence Lee Pifer.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, at Johnson-Overturf Funeral Home, Interlachen, with Chaplain Glen Busby officiating.

Burial will follow at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 3, at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, with full military honors.

Friends will be received Thursday, Feb. 2, from 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

In celebration of his life, a memorial video will be shown.
