Josiah was born 19 Nov 1800 in Tennessee, the son of William L. Dodd, Sr. and Agnes Blakely. He married Elizabeth Duncan on 16 March 1824 in Jefferson County, Tennessee. Elizabeth was the daughter of John Duncan and Jennet McCullah. They started their family in Tennessee, then in 1838 they removed to Sangamon County, Illinois, along with Josiah's parents and many of his siblings and Elizabeth's widowed mother and many of her siblings. Elizabeth made the entire journey to Sangamon County by horseback.
Josiah farmed in the vicinity of Springfield, Illinois until 1854 when he disposed of his holdings and together with his family removed to Mahaska County, Iowa. This moved included his daughter Nancy Young Dodd and her husband Calvary T. Sexton and their family. They settled near what used to be Flint, Iowa which was located about 2 1/2 miles from Peoria. Josiah's will was dated 16 December 1858 and filed for Probate 26 February 1859. It is not known for certain when and where his wife Elizabeth died, although some family researchers believe she died in Oregon in 1876.
Josiah and Elizabeth had six children: a daughter who died in Tennessee; John D. who died in Linn County, Kansas; Nancy Young the wife of Calvary Sexton who is also buried in Peoria Cemetery; Mary J. who died in Los Angeles; William P. who was captain of an Iowa regiment during the Civil War and lost his life at the battle of Hatchie, Mississippi; and Charles J. who died in Oregon.
