Life began for William Andrew Bartels on Dec 17, 1893. He was the son of Christ Bartels and Rosy nee Rau. The Bartels lived on a farm east of Deshler where William grew up. They had their young son, William, baptized on Jan 7, 1894, in Peace Lutheran Church of Deshler by Pastor Kahre. He received his Christian training and instructions under Pastor J Schwerin who confirmed him in the faith on Mar 24, 1907, in this same congregation.
It was also Pastor Schwerin who joined in marriage William A Bartels, and Olga Othling on Oct 9, 1921. The Bartels farmed on the southeast edge of Deshler until 1947 when they moved into town. William worked at the broom factory and the lumber yard to support his family.
In Feb, 1970, William slipped and broke his hip after which he spent considerable time recuperating a the hospital in Concordia, Kans., and Parkview Haven Nursing Home before returning home. He has lived at home for the past year.
The Lord granted a total of 77 years, 7 months, and 19 days to William A Bartels, all of which were lived as a member of Peace Lutheran Church.
At his passing he is survived by his four children: Gladys, Mrs. Alvin Hillman, Denver Colo.; Glen and Donald of Deshler; and Julena, Mrs. John Wadsworth, Methuen Mass.. He is also survived by one brother, Ernest, of Thornton, Colo.; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Koerwitz and Mrs. Henry Bock of Hebron, Mrs. Gorge Linson of Omaha, and Lena Bartels of Deshler. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Funeral services were held Aug. 9, at the Peace Lutheran Church in Deshler.
