Funeral services for Herbert Lamar Porter, 88, of Pioneer, Louisiana will be held at Goodwill Baptist Church, Oak Grove, LA at 2:00PM on Sunday, February 4, 2007, with Rev. Jimmie Herring and Rev. Jimbo Herring officiating. Interment will follow at the Red Wing Cemetery, Oak Grove, under the direction of Cox Funeral Home of Oak Grove. Mr. Porter died at Carroll Nursing Home on February 1, 2007.
Visitation will be Saturday from 4:00PM - 8:00PM at the Goodwill Baptist Church.
Lamar Porter was born August 5, 1918, in Ackerman, Mississippi, to Robert Lee Porter and Virginia Catledge Porter. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific. He was a resident of West Carroll Parish for 68 years. He was a faithful Christian and member of Goodwill Baptist Church for 62 years where he held the offices of deacon, church treasurer, and Sunday school teacher.
For over sixty years, Mr. Porter was married to his loving wife Irene Van Meter Porter, whose dedicated care enabled him to have a good quality of life thoughout his long illness. He was a resident of Clearlake Community where he was a well-known farmer. Lamar Porter was a good friend and neighbor and was loved and respected by everyone who knew him.
Perceding Mr. Porter in death were his parents and his brothers, James Porter of Mer Rouge, LA and Charles Porter of Jonesboro, Arkansas, and a sister, Martha Nell Porter Donohue, of Pioneer, LA.
Lamar Porter is survived by his wife, Irene Porter of Pioneer, LA; two brothers, Gerald Porter of Oak Grove, LA, and Frank Porter of Menifee, California; a sister, Mary Porter Elms of Ketchum, Oklahoma; a nephew, Chris Elms of Pioneer, LA; twelve other nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
