Staff Sergeant Robert R. Abbott 21 yrs. old, son of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Abbott, 619 Hull Ave. Findlay, Ohio. tail-gunner on a B-24 bomber was killed in action over Germany August 15, 1944.

Name of plane - "Lady Lightning", 42-52597 T9 M on 15 Aug 1944 when it failed to return due to German fighters. The plane crashed between Wapserveen and Nijensleek the Netherlands. They were attacked by 20 ME109G from III/JG53 and II/JG5. MACR 8428.

An eyewitness report:

Saw a plane that was on fire , was leaving the formation and at a height of about 1000 meters the plane exploded and ripped a wing but before it exploded he saw some crewmember bailed out.

The tail landed on a piece of land between Wapserveen and Nijensleek the rest of the plane came down east of Eesenveen. In the plane the body's of S/S Robert R Abbot and S/S Lowell D Stiles. The pilot 1LT John Suchi bailed out but probably his chute failed. His body was found in a field near the Wapserveensche Aa.
