William Ryle was a prominent silk manufacturer in Paterson, New Jersey and New York City. He was President of the Paterson Board of Trade at the time of his death. William Ryle was a nephew of John Ryle, the leading silk manufacturer in Paterson and the United States.

William Ryle married Mary Danforth, the daughter of Charles Danforth, leading locomotive manufacturer in Paterson.

William Ryle was in partnership with his uncle, John Ryle, as silk manufacturers for a number of years before turning his attention to the silk importing business in New York.

At the time of his death, William Ryle was reputed to be the largest importer of silk in the United States.
