Merlin Albert Whitby passed away at his home in Alpine April 5, 2002.

He was born in Alpine Feb 19, 1916 to John A. and Mamie Monson Whitby. He married Faye Clark June 20, 1938 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Merlin grew up on the family fruit farm in Alpine, and attended schools in Alpine and American Fork. He served in the North Central States Mission from 1936-1938. He enjoyed farming all his life, and worked at Geneva Steel Company for over 30 years. He was an active member of the LDS Church and served in numerous positions during his lifetime.

Merlin liked plain and simple things, and valued relationships over material goods. He loved nature and spent a great deal of time in the out-of-doors. He enjoyed reading, and was self-educated on a wide range of subjects. He had a curious nature, and loved to travel and meet new people. He was noted for his wonderful sense of humor and quick wit and his great memory for stories and anecdotes.

He is survived by his wife, Faye, Alpine; five children, Roger (Sandra) Whitby, Provo, Charlotte (Duard) Andreasen, Brigham City, Nadine (Art) Johns, Roseburg, OR, Loretta (Ken) Stevens, Alpine, Barbara (Raymond) Roper, Boulder, CO; 20 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; broth-er, Calvin (Louise) Whitby, sister, Lor-raine (Ronald) Strong; and sister-in-law, Lola Hutchison. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, David and Melbourne Whitby; and sisters, Elva Myers, LaRee Whitmer.

Services will be Wed. April 10, 11 a.m., Mountainville Chapel, 165 N. 100 E, Alpine. Friends may call Tues. 6-8 p.m., Anderson & Sons Mortuary, 49 E. 100 N, American Fork and at the church Wed. 9:45-10:40 a.m. Burial, Alpine City Cemetery.
