Howard was a member of Company C, 1st Battalion, 27th Infantry (Wolfhounds), 25th Infantry Division. He was sent to Vietnam in August 1967 and was killed in the Boi Loi Woods, north of Saigon, South Vietnam on November 1, 1967. He was on patrol when the Vietcong started shooting at him. He shot back until he was killed, thereby saving all but one of his platoon. Sgt. Albert Brillo was the only other American killed in the firefight. Howard was posthumously awarded the Silver Star, Purple Heart and two medals from the South Vietnamese.

Howard was married shortly before he was deployed to Vietnam. He died before he and his wife could have any children.
