Jacob C. Goss, 84, a resident of Mesa County for 80 years, died at his home here at 3 p.m. Saturday. He had been ill for some time.
A son of early settlers in the Fruita area, Mr. Goss came to Fruita in 1888 from Pueblo where the family had settled in 1885. He was born at Jefferson City, North Carolina on July 15, 1884. His childhood was spent in Fruita and Rangely.
He owned and operated a ranch near Loma from 1916 to 1966 when he retired. He spent 22 years as superintendent of Loma-Fruita Land and Canal Company ditch. He was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge of Fruita.
His first wife, Ollie McLeod, died in 1913. He married Ruth Kilby in Fruita on December 23, 1917. She taught fourth graders in Mesa County for 21 years, spending 15 years as a teacher in Loma before retiring in 1959. She survives.
Other survivors are three sons, Charles and Robert Dean Goss, both of Riverside, California, and Darryl Goss of Santa Rosa, California; three daughters, Mrs. Kenneth (Maxine) Hardy of Colorado Springs, Mrs. John J. (Marguaret) Kunard of Ontario, California, and Mrs. Earl (Virginia) Haller of Grand Junction; a brother, Morgan S. Goss of Grand Junction; two sisters, Mrs. Smith (Ellen) Kilby of Fruita and Mrs. William (Lulu) Havens of Vernal, Utah; 17 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
