The funeral service for Leonard Clayton Cottrill, 69, Vale, is 10 a.m., today (March 26), at Black Hills National Cemetery, near Sturgis. The Rev. John Tesnow officiates. Military honors will be provided.

He died Saturday, March 22, 2003, at his ranch near Vale. A memorial has been established for the VFW Club in Sturgis.

He was born December 31, 1933, in Miller, to Clayton and Esther Cottrill. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in January, 1954. He served in the 77th Field Artillery Battery, APO 841. During his enlistment, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Army Occupation Medal, (Germany), the Good Conduct Medal, Sharpshooters Medal, and the Ski Troop Medal. He was honorably discharged in January, 1956.

In his younger years, he was an avid rodeo participant. He loved farming, fishing, hunting, and square dance. He was an active member of the Black Hills National Cemetery Honor Guard and the Sturgis Veteran's Club. He was a lifelong resident of South Dakota. He moved to the Black Hills area in 1965 and worked for Wheeler Lumber until his retirement. He was a strong, honest, loving man with good morals, and valued work ethics. Everyone who knew him respected him. He was loved by many and will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was an active member of the Sturgis Area Veterans Honor Guard.

Survivors include three sons, Richard and Donald, both of Whitewood, and Leonard, Lead; a daughter, Leeann Holman, Spearfish; 14 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Arrangements are with the Carlsen and Aldinger Funeral Home in Spearfish.
