The nickname Betsey, by which she officially went by until her death, was taken to honor her best friend, Betsey Gourlay, who died at the age of 26.

Betsey and her husband Eleazer Allen moved from Hebron, Washington, New York to Erie before the 1860 census. In Erie, they purchased and operated a local boarding house.

After her husband Eleazer volunteered for the 145th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry and died in 1863 as an Infantry Private during the Civil War, Betsey alone, raised three boys in Erie, all of whom had rewarding lives working for the Lakeshore and Michagan Southern Railroad. Betsey received a $12 a month widows pension from the government until she died.

Betsey died in Buffalo where she had moved in 1899 to be near her grand daughters, Bessie and Charlotte.
