William was born Oct. 24, 1836 in Madison Co., Kentucky. Corporal William enrolled in the Union Army July 23, 1862 in Ky., along with his two brothers.

William Wallace Pettit died on his 78th birthday October 24, 1914 at Madison, Indiana, where he had recently moved. His body was taken by Saturday nights boat to Vevay, Indiana and buried Sunday in Zion Chapel (Tater Bug) Cemetery.
