CYRUS BROHIER PARKS WAS BORN NOVEMBER 6, 1875 IN GOLIAD, TEXAS, THE SON OF SOLOMON AND LOUISE PARKS.

HE BECAME WELL EDUCATED, BUT UNSURE AS TO WHICH PROFESSION TO PURSUE AS A CAREER. HE ATTENDED AUSTIN COLLEGE IN SHERMAN FOR TWO YEARS, EMORY UNIVERSITY IN GEORGIA FOR TWO YEARS, AND BAYLOR UNIVERSITY IN WACO FOR TWO YEARS WHERE HE PLAYED FOOTBALL, WHICH RESULTED IN A BROKEN NOSE. AT FIRST HE STUDIED TO BE A MINISTER, THEN DECIDED ON PRE-LAW, AND FINALLY ACCOUNTING. HE TOOK A VALET WITH HIM WHEN HE WENT OFF TO SCHOOL TO LOOK AFTER HIS HORSE AND CARRIAGE, AND TO TAKE CARE OF HIS CLOTHES.

ON FEBRUARY 13, 1899 CYRUS MARRIED JEANETTE LANGSTON IN CROCKET, TEXAS. CYRUS DID NOT TAKE TO RANCHING SO THIS CREATED A STRAINED RELATIONSHIP WITH HIS FATHER, SOL PARKS, OF THE PARKS RANCH IN FANNIN.

A SON,SOL MINCHEN PARKS, WAS BORN TO CYRUS AND JEANETTE IN 1905 WHILE LIVING IN CROCKETT, TEXAS.

IN 1908 CYRUS ACCEPTED AN ACCOUNTING JOB WITH A RUBBER COMPANY, WHICH TOOK HIM TO SOUTH AMERICA. THE RUBBER WAS HARVESTED ALONG THE AMAZON RIVER BY NATIVE INDIANS. WHILE SPENDING FIVE YEARS IN BRAZIL CYRUS LEARNED TO SPEAK CASTILIAN SPANISH, PORTUGUESE AND INDIAN. UPON RETURNING TO THE U.S. HE WAS AMAZED THAT PEOPLE WERE DRIVING CARS, FOR WHEN HE LEFT HORSES AND CARRIAGES WERE THE MODE OF TRAVEL.

WHILE CYRUS WAS IN SOUTH AMERICA JEANETTE WAS UNABLE TO CARE FOR LITTLE SOL. GRANDPARENTS, SOL AND LOUISE PARKS, WENT TO CROCKETT AND RETRIEVED THE CHILD. THEY OFFERED JEANETTE $10,000 AND LITTLE SOL WAS ADOPTED BY HIS GRANDPARENTS AND RAISED ON THE PARKS RANCH IN FANNIN.

CYRUS THEN MET VERA THIGPEN, A 28 YEAR OLD SCHOOL TEACHER. SHE WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED PIANIST AND CYRUS LOVED TO HEAR HER PLAY, SO HE KEPT HER IN NEW SHEET MUSIC. THEY WERE MARRIED IN FANNIN IN 1916, AND SETTLED THERE TO RAISE THREE CHILDREN--C.B., PRYOR, AND LORNA.

CYRUS ORGANIZED THE SAN JACINTO PICNICS, WHICH ARE HELD ANNUALLY NEAR THE APRIL 21ST DATE. THEY WERE ORIGINALLY HELD ALONG THE SAN ANTONIO RIVER, BUT MOVED TO THE FANNIN STATE PARK WHEN THE PAVILLION WAS BUILT. THIS TRADITION CONTINUES TODAY.

AN AVID CHESS PLAYER, CYRUS MET HIS MATCH WHEN"BUBBA" WAS HIS OPPONENT. HIS SON PRYOR, ALSO BECAME A CHALLENGE FOR HIM AS WELL.

CYRUS SUSTAINED A PERMANENT INJURY TO HIS RIGHT HAND WHEN A POWDER CAP WENT OFF ACCIDENTALLY. DESPITE THE LOSS OF TWO FINGERS, HIS HANDWRITING REMAINED TRUE PENMANSHIP.

IN ORDER TO HELP HIS UNCLE OUT OF A FINANCIAL BIND CYRUS MORTGAGED HIS LAND. HIS UNCLE, CYRUS LUCAS, WAS TO RE-PAY HIM WITH CATTLE. THIS NEVER TOOK PLACE, CAUSING CYRUS TO LOSE HIS PROPERTY, SINCE HE WAS UNABLE TO PAY OFF THE MORTGAGE.

WHEN WW II ERUPTED CYRUS AND HIS FAMILY MOVED TO SAN ANTONIO AND HE OPENED AN ACCOUNTING BUSINESS. HE CONTINUED TO OPERATE HIS BUSINESS WELL INTO HIS 80'S. SHORTLY AFTER HIS DEATH, VERA SOLD THE PROPERTY AND MOVED TO SEQUIN TO BE NEAR HER DAUGHTER. VERA REMAINED ACTIVE IN HER CHURCH AND THE COMMUNITY FOR THE NEXT 20 YEARS. SHE WAS AN EXCELLENT COOK, AN AVID GARDENER, DID BEAUTIFUL HANDWORK AND CROCHET, AND ENJOYED HER GRANDCHILDREN.
