William Andrew Quarles

Civil War Confederate Brigadier General. At the start of the Civil War, he was a successful lawyer at Clarksville, Tennessee when elected Colonel of the Confederate 42nd Tennessee Regiment in February, 1862. He led the 42nd Tennessee Regiment in engagements at Fort Donelson, siege of Vicksburg and Port Hudson. Promoted Brigadier General in August 1863, he was severely wounded at Pickett's Mill, Georgia and was removed from the line. After recovering, he led his brigade into Tennessee and while leading his brigade against Union forces at the Battle of Franklin, he was wounded and captured. He spent the rest of the war as a Union prisoner and was paroled in May, 1865. After the war resumed his law career in Clarksville and was a member of the Tennessee State Senate. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
