US Continental Congressman. He was a member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, 1742 to 1775 and a member of the Virginia committee of correspondence in 1773. In 1774, he was elected a member of the First Continental Congress, serving until 1775. Reelected to Second First Continental Congress, he declined to serve and was a member of the Virginia Revolutionary conventions of 1775 and 1776. He was elected to the Virginia House of Delegates in 1776, serving until his death. US Continental Congressman Theodorick Bland was his nephew. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
