Birth: Sep. 12, 1926
Death: Sep. 28, 2006

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of John Bortnak into the arms of the Lord on September 28, 2006 at age 80, after a long, valiant battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife Shirley; daughter Samantha; son Kim; son-in-love Rod Fish; granddaughters, Jennifer and Lindsay, and his "pride and joy" grandson Colton John. He was predeceased by his mom Jean Auld Bortnak and his dads, Demetrius (Fred) Bortnak and Patrick Murphy.

John was born in Saskatchewan on September 12, 1926 but moved to the mining town of East Coulee, AB as a child. He was a King Scout, and his hobbies were building and flying model airplanes. He had a Charlie McCarthy ventriloquist puppet, and also played the bagpipes. John enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy in 1944 and was very proud to be a veteran. When he retired from the ALCB, he pursued his interests with passion. John spent many happy times playing steel and dobro guitars in his country and western band "The Outriders." He was a weightlifter and bodybuilder who started the YMCA's first weight club, the Calgary Bodybuilding Association and the Calgary Model Airplane Club. He currently holds two world records and set ten Canadian records in power lifting. He was the IFBB representative in AB. He won the Senior Masters Class. John was the the first western inductee into the MAAC Hall of Fame as well as the only four-time Grand Champion of the SAAM championships in the U.S.A. His passion for flight carried over when he obtained his private pilot's license and spent over 1,000 hours flying. He has over 1,400 trophies to attest to his accomplishments.

"Fly high above the clouds, Dad. We love you."
