Fern (Fries) Fenno, 87, of St. Louis Park, and former longtime Crookston resident died Saturday, February 1, 1997 at the Texas Terrace Care Center in St. Louis Park.

Fern was born on April 8, 1909 in Crookston, the daughter of Leodore and Marie Capistran. She grew up on the family farm south of Crookston, attended country school and helped out on the farm.

She married Joseph G. Fries at cathedral in crookston on July 10, 1928. Joe was originally from LaCrosse, Wisconsin and the couple met when he came to work on the farm as part of the threshing crew. Fern and Joe were married for 35 years and raised wight children in Crookston. Joe Died on August 30, 1963.

Fern met her second husband Melvin B. Fenno, at a card party in the gymnasium of the old Cathedral High School. They were married on April 1, 1967 at the Cathedral. They too make Crookston their home and were married for 27 years. Mel died on June 26, 1994.

Over the years, Fern worked for Petterson-Biddick Company, J.C. Penney, the Pine to Palm Motel and the American Crystal Sugar company.

She was a member of the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception and belonged to the Catholic Daughters, the Eagles Auxiliary and the Eldred Home Study Club. She and Mel took part in many of the activities at the Golden Link Senior Citizen's Center.

Fern entered the Texas Terrace Care Center in October of 1995 due to failing health and in order to be closer to her family. She will be remembered for her loving devotion to family, her kind, gentle manner, her ever-ready smile, and her gift for inspiring affection. Fern is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by her family.

Survivors include three daughters, Delores "Dolly" Welch, St. Louis Park, Valerie Sullivan Ruwwe, Bayfield, Colorado, and Linda Deckon, Atlanta; four sons, Ronald, Waukesha, Wisconsin, Francis "Joe" St. Paul, Gregory, Colorado Springs, and James, Fort Meyers, Florida; six step-daughters, Lorriane Weiser, Trenton, Illinois, Constance Thelen, St. Cloud, Betty Ann Anderson, Crookston, Jean Fenno, Las Vegas, Mary Hagelie, St. Cloud, and Margeret Eastby, Findly, Ohio, five step-sons, Gerald Fenno, Crookston, James and Steven Fenno, both of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Thomas Fenno, Apple Valley, and Michael Fenno, Mount Vernon, Washington; many grandchildren and great grandchildren, a brother Lawrence Capistran, Montgomery, Alabama.

Besides her two husbands, Fern was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, Eileen Wilkens, wo died on April 21, 1995; two brothers, Maurice and Leodore Capistran Jr. and a sister Irene Case.
