28 May 1965: A county man was killed Thursday in a freak accident near Sunbury. He was identified as John S. Deitzler, 31, Jonestown RD 1. Deitzler escaped injury when his tractor-trailer overturned, but was struck and killed by another truck as he stood along the highway waiting for help. Deitzler suffered internal injuries and a crushed chest. Police Chief Harvey West, of Shamokin Dam, said Deitzler was hit by a tank truck operated by Lewis Palaski of Edison, N.J. Palaski's rig also overturned down the same embankment as did Deitzler's truck. Palaski escaped injury. West said Deitzler was operating a truck for the Jonas Donmoyer Trucking Co., of Ono. According to West, Deitzler's truck left the road at Shamokin Dam, along Routes 11-15, and went down a 25-foot embankment. West said Deitzler got out of his rig, went to call for assistance, returned to the scene of the accident and was standing on the berm of the highway when he was struck by Palaski's truck. Palaski's rig, police reported, went into a spin and overturned down the embankment. Deitzler was the husband of Gloria Swartzlander Deitzler and a son of William L. and Ethel Miller Deitzler, Jonestown RD 1. Besides his wife and his parents, he is survived by the following children: Theresa, Jack, Ruby, John Jr., and Levi, all at home. Also surviving are two brothers, James and William Jr., both of Jonestown RD 1; two sisters, Irene, wife of Mervin Lentz, Jonestown RD 2, and Mary, wife of Gene Brown, Myerstown RD 1, and his grandparents, the Rev. arid Mrs. William 0, Deitzler, Jonestown RD 1. He was a member of St. Elizabeth Congregational Church of Christ near Lickdale. [Lebanon Daily News]
