Cardinal Frantisek Tomásek

Roman Catholic Cardinal, Archbishop of Prague. He attended the seminary in Olomouc, Moravia and was ordained there in 1922. He was elected titular bishop of Buto in October 12th 1949. In July 1951 he was arrested by the communist regime and send to a labor camp where he stayed until May 1954. After his release he continued his pastoral work and took part in the Second Vatican Council. In 1965 pope Paul VI named him apostolic administrator of the archdiocese of Prague. He was created cardinal and reserved 'in pectore' in May 1976 and received the red hat in the following year. In December 1977 he was also appointed archbishop of Prague (a post he held until 1991) and attended the two conclaves of 1978 that elected John Paul I and John Paul II. (bio by: Lutetia)
