Gerrard was a Flight Sergeant, Air Gunner, with the 420 Squadron, RCAF. He was enroute from Portreath England to Ras El Ma in the middle east. He never made it as his Wellington bomber (HE961) went missing.

Second Son of Mr. and Mrs. Angus McDougall, ... Penetang St., Barrie, Lost his Life Overseas June 1, 1943.
Flt. Sgt. Gerard Daniel ("Gerry") McDougall (R-146608), younger son of Mr. And Mrs. Angus McDougall, 108 Penetang St., Barrie, is now for official purposes presume to have died on active service overseas on June
1,1943, according to a letter received by his parents, from Air Marshal Robert Leckie, Chief of the Air Staff, RCAF, Ottawa.
I wish to inform you and the members of your family my sincere and heartfelt sympathy "
The letter stated, It is most lamentable that a promising career should be thus terminated, and I would like you to know that his loss is greatly deplored by all those with whom your son was serving.'

Born in Barrie,August 22,1923, the young man attended St.Mary's School and played hockey for St. Mary's in the Church Hockey League. He attended B.C.I. for a year and was employed by United Cigar Store for a time. He bowled in the Town Bowling League.
Flt. Sgt. McDougall enlisted in the RCAF in December 1941, and served as security guard at Trenton, New Westminster, and Vancouver, B.C. He re-mustered for aircrew, and graduated as an air gunner at No. 8 Bombing and Gunnery School, Lethbridge, Alta., in October 1942, going overseas in December 1942.
Surviving are his parents, one brother.... in Peterboro, and four sisters,.... all at home.
