S-Lt Barre was one of the 36 officers and 136 naval ratings who went down with their ship H.M.S. Forfar when it was torpedoed and sunk by U-Boat 99, about 500 miles west of Ireland, on December 2, 1940. He was just 23, a son of Robert J. and Esther C. Barre of Barrie, Ontario, Canada. Barre Drive inBarrie, Canada is named in his honour.
