She served in World War I as a nurse.
Nell began her education in a one room schoolhouse in Beckville , A village named for her great grandfather John Jacob Beck. She was accepted for nurse's training by the Pennsylvania Hospital in Philadelphia, our nation's first hospital founded by Benjamin Franklin.
When the United States declared war on Germany, April 6,1917, Nell's mind was made up she prepared to go overseas with the Pennsylvania Hospital Unit. At the time she was about 30 years old.
This article appeared in the Pottsville Journal May 3 1917
" From a certain port in the United States, at an hour unknown, Miss Nellie R. Beck will tomorrow sail for France to take up the humanitarian duties of a red cross nurse in that battle-scarred nation. She will be one of 50 professional nurses who recently volunteered their services for red cross work in France"

She was stationed with the Americian Expeditionary Force, Base Hospital #10, Le Treport France.

Nell returned to Beckville according to this clipping.
"Miss Nell R. Beck of this town, a daughter of W.J. Beck landed in New York yesterday from the transport Rotterdam after a service of almost 2 years in France as a Red Cross Nurse. Miss Beck was a member of Pa. Hospital unit #10 which sailed for France May 1917. This unit was one of the very first to respond to the call for volunteers after war was declared on Germany.Since the strict censorship has been relaxed it has been learned here that Miss Beck has had some very exciting times. She was staioned at Le Treport in the Amiens sector and hospital was bombed a number of times by Germans. At such times they were forced to take refuge in dug outs or other shelter because the huns would not respect the Red Cross plainly marked on hospital buildings and grounds.

Yes she returned to Beckville but not for long. She went back to Philadelphia to continue working as a private duty nurse at the Pennsylvania Hospital

Then she retired to Beckville with her sisters Mary & Grace until her death Jan 4 1961 at the age of 74.The day before Christmas, 1960, she fell in her home and fractured her hip. Less than two weeks after the accident she passed away. She is buried in Cressona Cemetery a place she considered one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots on earth.

The Memorial in the pictures is for Cressona, PA world war I Nell is the only female on the memorial and the only one from the town to serve.

Many letters from her time in France were saved and written into a story of her life by her niece Jean E. Trometter Bazar from which these excerpts were taken.

*This letter I would like to share:*
Jan 28 1918 I have sad news Miss Fairchild died Jan 18th and was buried the next day.We were such good friends. She had a military funeral, about 300 present, and beautiful flowers.Several of the girls helped me make the lining for her casket. They put the soliders in only wrapped in a sheet but I couldn't see Miss Fairchild being put in a bare box so we bought crepe-de-chene and made a cotton padding. Two blanklets one in the bottom and one to cover her.

So if you have time please leave a flower for Miss Helen Fairchild also.
