He was a farmer, 6 feet 1 inchs tall, with blue eyes and light hair and complexion when he joined the Union Army in Portsmouth, Ohio on August 25, 1861. He served as a private in Company H, 94th Regiment of Ohio Infantry and a private in Company F, 33rd Regiment of Ohio Infantry. He was wounded in action August 2, 1864 near Atlanta, Georgia and was dischaged on October 4, 1864 at Rome, Georgia.
After service in the GAR, he moved to Neodisha, Kansas, then Red Bluff, California, finaly to Red Bank, California where he died.
