Isabelle Allegree Bailey, wife of deceased Dr. C. Cabell Bailey, died on Saturday, February 18, 2012, at the age of 98.
Isabelle Bailey was born in Charlottesville on December 23, 1913.
She attended Longwood College from 1931 untiil 1933, and graduated from University of Virginia in 1935, with a B.S. in education. She received the Algerion Sidney Sullivan award in 1935 and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority. After graduation, she taught at Handley High School in Winchester, Virginia from 1935 until 1938. She was sponsor for the Handley High class of 1938. She was married on July 23, 1938, and lived in Richmond while Cabell was a medical resident there. They moved to Boston, Massachusetts, and lived in the Boston area. She served on the board at New England Deaconess Hospital and was director of Diversional Therapy. She was a girl scout's leader, on the board for Christian Woman's Club and an early member of the Fellowship of Christian Puppeteers. She began her puppet ministry at the Wayland Congregational Church in Wayland, Massachusetts. She also taught Sunday school for many years and was active in her churches. In 1977, she and Cabell returned to Charlottesville where she continued her puppet ministry with the Glory Puppets. She was also involved with Christian Woman's Club and a member of P.E.O. in Charlottesville. She and Cabell were one of the first residents to move into the Colonnades Retirement Community when it first opened in 1991. She was very creative and organized the resident's gardens which are thriving today also help start the weekly Bible study which continues today. In 2007, she moved to Fishersville to live with her daughter, Cynthia and her husband, Joe Steele. She attended Wayne Hills Baptist Church, in Waynesboro, Valley Woman's Connection, the Daily Living Center in Waynesboro, and had caregivers from Home Instead Senior Care and Hospice of the Shenandoah.
She is survived by her two daughters, Harriet Lee Bailey Ward and husband Dallas Tucker Ward, of Orange Park, Florida, and Cynthia Belle Bailey Steele and husband, Joseph Matthew Steele, of Fishersville, Virginia; and a grandson, David Cabell Steele of Fredericksburg.
Visitation was held Monday, February 27, 2012, at Hill and Wood Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Life was held Tuesday, February 28, 2012, at the Hill and Wood Funeral Home Chapel. Following burial at Maplewood Cemetery, there was a reception at Wayne Hills Baptist Church in Waynesboro.
