Son of the late Olivia Brock Gilbert and George Baker. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Jon Martin Gilbert; and step-grandchild Aris Jerome Tyler.
As a child, he moved to Barboursville, Virginia, and graduated from Albemarle Training School and attended Virginia State College (now University). He served in the United States Army as a Sergeant during the Korean Conflict. He worked for many years at the University of Virginia, Department of Medical Records and later became a self-owned/operated taxi driver with Yellow Cab Company for over 30 years. He enjoyed fishing and was an avid fan of all sports especially the Washington Redskins and the University of Virginia. He had a great love for music and enjoyed singing his favorite hymns. He dedicated his life to Christ at an early age at the Blue Run Baptist Church in Barboursville, Virginia.
After moving his membership, he served on the Deacon board and was a member of the Senior Choir at the Zion Hill Baptist Church in Roseland, Virginia. In his later years, he became a member of the Mount Zion First African Baptist Church in Charlottesville, Virginia, where he served on the Sanctuary Choir until his eyesight began to fail.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Barbara Lewis Baker; children, Olivia Marie Whitten, Leon Baker Jr., Calvin Baker and Anne Brown; stepchildren, Jerome Tyler Jr. and Angela Whindleton; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; the mother of his children, Sarah Jackson Baker; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and devoted friends.
A memorial service was held at Mount Zion First African Baptist Church.
