Born in Richmond, VA and lived throughout the state of Virginia during her childhood as the daughter of a Methodist minister. She attended Old Dominion University and Westhampton College. She married Harry in 1947 and after several years of living in southwestern Virginia, they moved to Charlottesville, where she resided for the remainder of her life. She was active in the community, serving on the boards of Martha Jefferson House and the Mental Health Association, and volunteering with numerous local organizations. She was a member of Rivanna Garden Club and the Central Virginia Watercolor Guild. Virginia's lifelong love of art was cultivated by travel and continuous study.
Virginia is survived by a son, Randall Lee Austin; a daughter, Sarah Austin Dandridge; five grandchildren, three great grandchildren and other extended family.
A memorial service was held Tuesday, September 14, 2010, at First United Methodist Church, 101 E. Jefferson St., Charlottesville, VA.
