Birth location most likely Haldimand, Northumberland, Ontario, Canada where the Hinman and Bradley family's resided for many years.

Reuben was the third son, fourth child of eight known children of Perlee Henry (Reuben) Couch and Emeline Hinman. His family migrated from Haldimand Township, Northumberland County, Ontario, Canada in 1849 to Plymouth, Sheboygan, Wisconsin, USA where they were enumerated on the US Federal Census of 1850. In 1860 they were enumerated in Greenbush, Sheboygan, Wisconsin.

Military:

Enlisted: 1 June 1861, Wisconsin 8th Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company B, Rank: Corporal.
Mustered Out: 15 December 1862 due to disability.

Re-enlisted: 22 February 1864, 36th Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Company G , Rank: Sargent.

Captured: 25 August 1864 in the Battle of Ream's Station, Virginia.

Prisoner of War at Salisbury Confederate Prison, Salisbury, Rowan, North Carolina.

Organized at Madison, Wis., and mustered in March 23, 1864. Ordered to Washington, D. C, May 10, thence marched to Spottsylvania Court House and attached to 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, 2nd Army Corps, Army of the Potomac.

SERVICE.—Spottsylvania Court House May 18-21. North Anna River May 23-26. On line of the Pamunkey May 26-28. Totopotomoy May 28-31. Bethesda Church June 1. Cold Harbor June 1-12. Before Petersburg June 16-18. Siege of Petersburg June 16, 1864, to April 2, 1865. Weldon Railroad June 22-23, 1864. Demonstration north of the James River July 27-29. Deep Bottom July 27-28. Demonstration north of the James at Deep Bottom August 13-20. Strawberry Plains August 14-18. Ream's Station August 25."
