Sara Boone Baird, of Richmond, died peacefully in her sleep on January 25, 2011. She was predeceased by her son, Dr. R. Pryor Baird III in 2010; and her husband, Roger P. Baird Jr. in 2000.
Her survivors include Anne Baird Newman and her husband, Dr. Robert Joseph Newman, of Greenville, N.C., and their daughters, Lesley Pryor Newman of Tucson, Arizona, and Sara Virginia Newman of Seattle, Washington. Sara graduated from Jackson High School in Georgia in 1938, and received a B.A. degree in journalism at Mercer University in 1942. She was employed by the Army Air Corps at Warner Robins Field, Macon, Georgia. Before leaving the U.S. Air Force she was a Civilian Personnel Officer at Andrews Air Force Base. While living in Washington, D.C., she received a Master of Arts degree in government and public administration.
She married Roger Pryor Baird Jr. of Richmond on January 21, 1950. In 1961, she began work as a teacher at Collegiate School. Sara took additional course work through the University of Virginia, University of Richmond and Virginia Commonwealth University, including classes in economics. Her last years of work at Collegiate involved developing an economics education program for K-12 grades. As the administrator of this program supported by the E. Angus Powell Endowment, Sara trained teachers and assisted other schools in developing economic programs.
Sara enjoyed being active in River Road Church, Baptist, the Republican Party, the Tuckahoe Woman's Club, the Tuckahoe Artists' Association and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where she studied painting for many years. Graveside services at Westhampton Memorial Park.
