Quote from the prison monument. "They paid their debt to society may God remit their debt to him".

Mr. Cannon's great granddaughter, Tanisha Brown, writes.

" It's believed that Taft Cannon was born in Tennesee June 30, 1910 to Emma Cannon. His father is unknown. Later in his life he made his way to Chicago, Illinois and during that time he Met and married a woman named Ruth. Her maiden name is unknown for certain, but her Mothers name was Loula May Lindsay. Taft along with Ruth, Loula May , her and sister Clara Lindsay owned a home at 3358 E. 91st Street South East Side of Chicago Illinois and they were all members of Pilgrim Baptist Church on 91st Street. Ruth and Taft had there first of six children around 1940 at the age of 30. The oldest Janice, then Steven, Maurice, Rodney, Yovvone(my grandmother), and the youngest Stephanie born November of 1956. In about Apri of 1957 during a domestic disturbance Taft under the influence of alchol shot and killed his wife Ruth with her mother and all six children present. The older children including my gradmother who was six at the time were not allowed to visit or talk to their father again. A year later they were told he died. Ruth's mother who took the children in, had trounble dealing with the witnessing and killing of her daughter and became abusive toward the children. Steven and Rodney have now passed away. They heard from people that Taft commited suicde in jail or that he was murderd . The remaining children would like to know what really happened to their father and find a photo of him. Thanks to you we know what prison he died in and how to obtain his information. The family will be visiting his grave site during our upcoming spring break. Taft Cannon commited a horrible crime we aknowledge that and we pray he asked God for forgiveness and want him to know he is not forgotton. I hope this information is useful to you. Again Thank You for caring enough to do something like this."
