Silas Perkins Collins is the son of Dr. John Collins and Elizabeth (Perkins) Collins. He was a teacher, surveyor, farmer, and traveler. His name is said to be carved above that of George Washington on the limestone arch of Natural Bridge, Virginia. He purchased government land in Scotland County, Missouri, about 1853, and encouraged others in his family to move to the area. He was an out-spoken abolitionist and died before the Civil War broke out. He married Sarah Anna Thomas on July 1, 1851, in Covert, Seneca County, New York. She and their 4 year old daughter Mary joined him in Scotland County on September 22, 1856. Their second child, Charles Frances Collins, was born there in 1857.
