John Lawrence Scarborough came from Louisiana to Anderson County, Texas. When the war between the states broke out John joined up as a Pvt. with Bass' Regt' Texas Mtd Vols which became the 20th Texas Cavalry. He was one of the Church Trustees that bought the land for the Hopewell Cemetery and was a member of the William Foster Masonic Lodge, #312 in Fosterville. He was a Master Mason
