British Diplomat. Born in London, he served as the British ambassador to Iran from 1971 to 1974, and the United States from 1974 to 1977. Educated at Eton and Oxford universities, he joined the British Army in 1942 as a member of the British Intelligence Corps, fluent in German, Russian and French. He was a participant in the D-Day invasion of occupied France. He ended the Second World War with the rank of lieutenant colonel, and was the recipient of the French Croix de Guerre medal. Following the war he joined the British Foreign Service in 1948. From 1969 to 1971 he served as the High Commissioner of Cyprus, and from 1977 to 1980 as the Governor of Bermuda. He was the recipient of the The Most Distinguished Order of St. Michael and St. George (CMG) in 1964, a knighthood of the Order of St. Michael and St. George (KCMG) in 1972, and the Royal Victorian Order (GCVO) in 1976. He died at his home in Ovington, southern England from complications of pneumonia.
