Olympic Athlete. He captured a Silver medal for the United States in the 400 meter dash at the 1972 Munich Games, then was barred from future competition for his actions during the awards ceremony. Raised in Los Angeles, he was a track star in high school, and at UCLA, where he won Pac-8 titles in sprinting and hurdles while anchoring three NCAA champion relay teams. At the 1972 Olympics, Collett was a favorite going in; he captured Silver in the 400 meter event, while fellow American Vince Matthews took Gold. During the medal ceremony, Collett and Matthews would not face the flag, and chatted during the National Anthem, with Collett rendering a black power salute after the music ended; the International Olympic Committee's reaction to the perceived disrespect was swift, with Collett and Matthews banned for life. The loss of the two, plus an injury to John Smith, forced the United States to withdraw from the 4X400 meter relay that the team had been expected to win. After the Olympics, he returned to UCLA, earning an MBA in 1973 and a law degree in 1977, then working in real estate and mortgage law in Los Angeles. Collett was named to the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 1992, and died of cancer. Of his 1972 actions, he said: "I love America. I just don't think it has lived up to its promise...". (bio by: Bob Hufford)
