William Dore, a young man from Brooklyn, was a rifleman with Baker Company, 24th Marines, from its inception. He carried a Garand during the battle for Namur, and requalified with a BAR in the spring of 1944.

Dore was wounded on June 16, 1944, and was evacuated from Saipan. His injuries were bad enough to necessitate several months in the hospital, but he returned to the company in the late fall. Dore was promoted to corporal, issued a new BAR, and sent back to his platoon.

Corporal Dore was killed in action on February 20, 1945, shortly after landing on Iwo Jima. He was buried in Plot 1, Row 4, Grave 184 of the Fourth Marine Division Cemetery.
