Colonel Milton B. Cooper, USMC (Ret.), died Jan. 24, 2005, at Kindred Hospital, San Diego. He was 86 years old, born Oct. 1, 1918, in Jacksonville, Fla.

He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps July 16, 1937, and served in every rank up to colonel. He was commissioned in the field right after the Marianas campaign, and continued to serve in the same unit until after the war. He participated in the battles of Roi-Namur, Marshall Islands, Saipan, Tinian and Iwo Jima.

After the war he served at several East Coast stations and then Korea. Returning to the U.S., he was assigned to Marine Corps Test Unit 1 at Camp Pendleton, and was in the atomic tests in 1955 with that unit. His second tour in Korea was as senior advisor to the First Republic of Korea Marine Division and the Marine Corps Base, Pohang. Following that, he was assigned to the Fleet Marine Force, Pacific Headquarters in Hawaii and then to Camp Pendleton from where he retired on his birthday in 1970.

He holds the Legion of Merit, Navy Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, in addition to campaign medals.

He is survived by his wife, Eva K.; his son, Stephen R.; daughter-in-law Trilby of Carlsbad; brother Randolph of Jacksonville, Fla.; and grandsons David R. and Adam J. of Carlsbad.
