He died in the battle of Iwo Jima and was the winner of the Silver Star and the Purple Heart. He was inducted into the service and sent to Parris Island to receive his basic training in June of 1944. From there he was sent to Little river, N.C. from where he embarked for overseas duty. On Christmas day 1944 he was at Pearl Harbor and later went into combat on Iwo Jima with the Fourth Marine Division. He was killed by fragments of an enemy mortar shell while taking part in an attack upon enemy positions.

He was the son of Dudley J. Barnhill.
