Death: Jul., 1881

Edwin Magruder Muncaster was born to Zachariah (1779-1815) and Harriet Magruder Muncaster (1783-1865). His father died in 1815 when Edwin was only 6, but he lived on his fatherís farm for most of his school days. His mother raised him and his two brothers Walter James Muncaster (1805-aft 1840) and Otho Zacheriah Muncaster (1814-1893). Edwin entered West Point, and was a classmate of Robert E Lee, but after two years he had to resign because of eye problems.

He returned to Montgomery County and married Rachel Robertson, also a native of the county on May 26, 1836. They moved to Baltimore where he engaged in the dry goods business for a number of years. Harriet Maria (1837-1911), William Edwin (1839-1922) and Otho Magruder (1843-1916) were their three children. They lived next door to Robert E Leeís sister.

The failure of Rachel's health was followed by a return to the country, where she owned the farm of about 700 acres at Flower Hill, and 350 acres at Milton. Rachelís parents got Edwin started farming at Flower Hill with enough slaves to carry it on. Rachelís health improved at first, but she died in 1859.

About 1875 his daughter, Harriet Maria Muncaster Talbott (1837-1911), and her family moved into the home and she took charge of the house. Edwin never took much part in civil life of the County, but was for years an elder in the Presbyterian Church of Rockville, MD. He was a supporter of the free school system and gave the land for one of the first free schools in Montgomery County.

Edwin died at Flower Hill. He was buried there but the graves were moved to Laytonsville United Methodist Church Cemetery before the Mill Creek Towne elementary school was built there in 1966.
