Born in Prairie Township, Holmes County, Ohio. Shown as Cornelius Rice on the 1850 Census of Prairie Township.
Private in Company C, 47th Ohio Infantry during the Civil War. During Sherman's March to the Sea, he was captured at Irwin's Crossroads, Georgia, taken to the county jail in Sandersville and then to the county jail in Milledgeville, then the state capital. He escaped from that jail and walked home to Greenville, Ohio.
Family legend has it that when he reached Greenville, he found his mother selling eggs on the street as was her custom. When she saw him, she did not recognize him because he was so ragged and dirty, but when he called, "Mama, it's Neal," she dropped her eggs and ran to him.
Married Anna Emma Weybright on November 15, 1873, in Darke County, Ohio.
Four children (including one set of twins) were born of their marriage:
1. Calvin Rice, August 28, 1875, died in infancy
2. Frank Rice, August 28, 1875, died in infancy
3. Viola Margaret "Maggie'' or "Olie" Rice, born Feb 16, 1878. Died 1951. Married Harvey Ratliff on June 23, 1894. They had 9 children, including 2 sets of twins.
