TWO CHILDREN PERISH IN FIRE AT PLAYHOUSE
Bodies Are Discovered When Firemen Tear Away Side Of Shack Near Madison Home
Madison, Wis., (AP) — Two children, Ernest Daleo, 5, and Josephine Montalto, 3, cousins, burned to death in a playhouse in the rear of the latter's home here yesterday, their fate unknown to the neighborhood until firemen tore away one side of the shack.
The children's bodies were burned to a crisp, The youngsters apparently started the fire with matches and were trapped — the only door being barred by a wheelbarrow.
Callisto Cerro discovered the fire. He received no answer to his shouts and believed the shack was unoccupied. Then he calmly proceeded to extinguish the blaze with water from a garden hose.
According to 11-year-old Josie Provenzano, who was passing through the yard before the fire, Ernest helped his cousin through the window of the shack and then clambered through himself. The shack measured eight by six feet and its roof was about five feet at one end and three at the other.
"If I had known anyone was in there, I might have been able to there, I might have been able to get them out," Cerro said, "But I thought no one was there. I knew children played there but I thought they got scared and ranaway after starting the fire.
"I tried to put out the fire with the hose, but the little water didn't amount to much. Then the firemen came. They found those two little kids in there all burned up. My God, if I had only known they were in there."
