"Walter Vernon Hardin, 87, of De Soto died Jan. 17, 2005, at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Crystal City. Mr. Hardin was a rural carrier for the U.S. Postal Service. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1185 and St. Rose of Lima Church in De Soto. Born Dec. 22, 1917, in De Soto, he was the son of the late Charles Morgan and Clara Jane (Brewen) Hardin.
He is survived by his wife Mildred (Sloan) Hardin of De Soto; five sons: Richard (June) Hardin of De Soto, Robert (Frances) Hardin of De Soto, David (Mary Sue) Hardin of Villa Ridge, Charles "Puddin" (Audrey Jo) Hardin of De Soto and Duane (Laurie) Hardin of Festus; five daughters: Georgia Black of Festus, Frannie (Bill) Madison of De Soto, Rose Marie (Ron) Gillam of Festus, Donna (Clarence) Shirrell of Jackson, and Glenda (Dennis) Coleman of Papillion, Neb.; one sister, Margie (Don) Becker of St. Louis; one sister-in-law, Hazel Hardin of De Soto; 30 grandchildren; and 30 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mabel Marie (Luebbers) Hardin; three sisters: Cecile Reed, Rachel Meier and Thelma Aly; and three brothers: Clyde Hardin, Wayne Hardin and Melvin Hardin.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. today (Jan. 20) at St. Rose of Lima Church, officiated by the Rev. Ron Hopmeir. Burial is in Calvary Cemetery in De Soto. Memorials may be made to the American Lung Association. Arrangements are under the direction of Dietrich-Mothershead Funeral Home in De Soto."
