Several spellings of Dietrich have been used in different documents, newspaper articles, and by different members of the same family. The two most common have been Dietrich and Dietrick. Francis and his family used Dietrick.
Francis was born in Pennsylvania in Aug 1859 to parents John Adam Dietrich, born in Bavaria (1811-1890), and Elizabeth Sherdon, born in France (1816-1888).
Francis was the tenth child in a family of eleven children all born in Pennsylvania. His brothers and sisters were: Mathias, b. ca 1839; Ann M., b. ca 1840; John J., b. 1843; Elizabeth A., b. ca 1845; Catharine, b. ca 1849; twins Charlotte and Christina, b. 1850; Barbara, b. 1851; Lydwina, b. 1855; and Michael, b. 1846.
On Jun 30 1885, in St. Benedict Catholic Church, Francis married Matilda C. Fox, born in Pennsylvania (1867-1959). Matilda was a daughter of Henry and Catherine Fox, both born in Germany.
Francis and Matilda settled into a life of farming in Carroll, Pennsylvania. They had thirteen children, the following twelve known: Henry, Edwin, Regina, Lucinda, Callustus, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Rosalia, James, Gilbert, John and Ruben.
Francis died on Nov 8, 1925, and he and several family members are buried in St. Benedict Cemetery.
