James H. M. Bradley was born in Ireland in 1843, to parents Michael Bradley (1793-1872) and Bridget Murray (1800-1883), both born in Ireland.
In 1850, the family immigrated to the United States, first settling in Maryland, and then later in Pennsylvania.
James was the youngest child in a family of eight children. His brothers and sisters were: John Bradley (1824-1896), Patrick J. Bradley (1826-1910), Mary E. Bradley-Kearney (1832-1911), Michael C. Bradley (1833-1900), Dennis Bradley (1834-1898), Annie Bradley-Henry (1838-1904), and Bridget Bradley-O'Riell (??-??), all born in Ireland.
From information supplied by a family researcher: "During the Civil War, James reportedly fought for the Confederacy, while his brothers fought for the Union. After the Civil War, the family moved to Cambria County, Pennsylvania. They continued to work as farmers. James, however, reportedly grew restless of farming and left home to pursue a job as a coal miner which was a booming industry."
On Aug 17, 1869, James married Mary Elizabeth Donaldson (1842-1897), born in Pennsylvania. Mary "Molly" was a daughter of Edward Donaldson (1804-1854) born in Pennsylvania, and Eliza Steiner/Stiner (1819-1865), born in Germany.
James and Mary lived mostly in Cambria County, where James worked in the coal mines. James and Mary had seven children: Annie E. Bradley-Best (1870-1903), Stella M. Bradley-Madigan (1873-1910), Harry J. Bradley (1874-1918), William James Michael Bradley, Sr. (1877-1937), Edward Thomas Bradley (1879-1944), Francis P. Bradley (1882-1920), and Aline M. Bradley-Ball (1884-1955).
James died on Jul 3, 1906 in Hastings. In a newspaper article, " . . . fell while descending steps to the basement of the Palmer House on Tuesday afternoon, and was rendered unconscious. He died four hours later. Funeral services conducted at St. Bernard Church."
