Maggie Mae "Little Miss" Hubble

Multnomah County

Death: Aug. 28, 2004
Clark County
Washington, USA

"Little Miss Maggie Mae" as she was called, was by far the best friend I've ever had. The runt of the litter, she only weighed 6 pounds and was 3/4 the size of an average female cat. But she made up for her small physical size with a huge heart of gold, a sweet temperament, and a great personality.

I was her fourth and last owner. The previous three owners, all women, had numerous dogs and cats. Maggie didn't do well in those multiple pet households. She liked one on one attention (who doesn't?). So when she was given to me and was the only furry kid in the house, she thrived with all of the undivided love given to her. I got her when she was 8 years old - halfway through her life.

She was a great companion and at times would follow me around the house like a dog and even did some little tricks on occasion, usually involving jumping. Very smart and protective, she would tuck me into bed then stay up all night to guard me and look out the windows for intruders, whether real or imagined. Her only enemy in life was the vacuum cleaner which she hated with a passion. If the vacuum came out of the closet she would give it a dirty look, hiss at it, and then go hide under the bed to escape that terrible roaring monster with the one glowing eye!

She was born with a crooked tail as the bones were shaped like a "Z". With her long fur covering it all up, her tail looked like a big gray puff ball. A lot of people thought she had a short tail like a Manx, but it was deformed. That just made her more special in my eyes.

Her purring was so soft I could barely hear it even when she was lying in bed right next to my head. I guess that was because she was so petite and had a small throat and larynx. However, she was fairly vocal and would "talk" to me with various types of meows and trills. And if she wanted to emphasize a particular meow she would tilt her head and squint her eyes - very CUTE! Just picture that in your mind and you'll see what I mean.

She was not a finicky eater and was happy with dry cat food and water and nothing more. I tried giving her wet cat food many times but she didn't like it. However, two treats she did love (now and then) were canned tuna and baked chicken. If she smelled tuna or chicken she would stand up on her little back legs, pat me on my legs, and meow over and over rapidly to hurry me up and to make sure I didn't forget to serve her a special meal!

Her favorite spot in the evening was laying on my warm lap as I sat watching TV. I would lightly stroke her head and neck and she would purr softly. Sometimes she would relax so much that she would drool a little. And other times she'd have dreams and would twitch about right on my lap!

As she got older she got more and more health problems, like we all do as we age. In the top photo on the right, you can see her holding up her right front paw which had developed arthritis by that point. She would hold it up as much as possible to lessen the pain. If she had to walk on it she would limp a little.

Towards the end she ate and drank less and less finally getting down to only 4.5 pounds in weight. She couldn't even move the last day and just laid next to me with her eyes closed - taking a breath every 8 to 10 seconds or so. She knew instinctively that it was the end. I had no other choice but to take her to the vet and have her humanely euthanized. It was so hard to let her go but I had to think of her and not myself. I'm not ashamed to admit I cried every day for weeks afterwards, I missed my little friend so much. And still do.

She was the best kitty companion I ever had - and ever will have. I miss her very much every day and think of her all the time. She gave me more unconditional love and respect than ANY human has ever given me.

Thank you for leaving flowers for Maggie Mae. Each and every one is much appreciated.
