Kitty Pidgeon
Birth: unknown
Vermont, USA
Death: Feb. 14, 2006
North Providence
Providence County
Rhode Island, USA

Kitty wandered into my life when she wandered onto the porch of mine and my husband Jody's apartment, on South Pleasant Street in Middlebury, Vermont, around June of 1996. Our porch was sort of like stray-cat central, but I saw right away Kitty was different. She didn't look neglected at all, and I was surprised when she let me pick her up the first time we met. She kept coming around, and I learned from a neighbor that another neighbor had recently moved away and just left her. So she was mine! The first few months we had her she came and went as she liked, and we left the window open at night so she could go in and out. That stopped when she left a bat with its head chewed off on the floor one morning! That summer, it became apparent Kitty was pregnant, and on Aug. 22, 1996 she had 5 babies, most of them on our bed--what a mess! Her babies were Arnold, Fuzzball, Magill, Zelda (her look-a-like) and Doc (who was Siamese!). She was a good mom and we had fun helping her raise her kids. Once they had all found good homes, Kitty became an indoor-only cat the rest of her life.

During her life Kitty lived in many places. First of course, the apartment in Middlebury where we took her in. Then in what was basically a one-room shack in Castleton, Vermont. While we lived there, me & her were home alone one day, when I noticed she was interested in something in the corner by the front door. I went to investigate and there was a big old black snake! Yikes! I picked her up and she scratched the heck out of me cos she really wanted to get at it! After that adventure, we lived on Strongs Avenue in Rutland, Vermont for almost 3 years, the home she lived in the longest. There was a mouse problem there, but Kitty took care of that! We then moved to Frederick, Maryland. She had a big window she loved to sit in and watch the rabbits, birds and squirrels outside. And she used to sit in that window and look for me to come home from work. She'd meow when she saw me coming, and I'd go in, kick off my shoes, and we'd roll around on the floor. Except on Fridays, when I brought us home a salad, with extra ham & cheese piled on top for her. From there it was back to Rutland, and an apartment on West Street. And finally, her final home was here in Providence, where she enjoyed a great big home and a great big bed (finally!) for her final 14 months.

The thing Kitty liked most was snoozing, which was fine, cos I like that too. We always shared the bed, and she always either had to lay on top of me somehow, or she would curl up on the pillow beside my head. Her purr was very relaxing when I was trying to sleep. She had the world's loudest purr, and it was going all the time, sometimes all I had to do was look at her. She always "clawed" the blankets (or me!) to get comfy, and purred very loud while she did it. Kitty liked catnip alot, she liked the loose stuff, but preferred it when it was inside a toy she could attack. She would grab the toy with her front paws and kick it with her back paws, frequently managing to go nuts and kick it halfway across the room! She loved her cardboard scratching toy, scratching it several times a day. She loved belly rubs, and especially face rubs. She'd move her head around to let you know where you needed to scratch for her. She liked hugs and kisses, and again, would move her head to let you know where she needed smooching. She liked cheese, and lunchmeat, tuna fish, chicken, steak, milk and the occasional weird thing like lettuce (from me) and pork rinds (from Jody!). She would only drink water from a cup, with a frosty mug being preferred. An ice cold frosty mug always sat by her food dish. Wednesdays and Sundays she got wet food, and always knew what day it was. I'd let her pick what flavor she wanted by holding up two cans. She loved cat treats, her favorite was Whiska Lickins tuna flavored treats. And whenever I had to break open a new bag of dry food, I had to hold the bag down on the floor, let her stick her head all the way in and eat the first few bites right out of the bag. We always laughed at her "tastyfaces" after she ate. Other random bits: Kitty loved to lay on newspapers, and rip them up too! She scratched my head in the mornings to wake me up. She always made a strange noise when she was startled or wanted something. She once attacked the tv for an hour watching a PBS show about cats. Moths were a tasty snack. She had her own chair at the computer so she could surf the net with me. Jean-clad legs made excellent scratching posts. She enjoyed munching on cat grass. She always sat guard by the shower. She always had a problem with her fur on her back getting all clumpy, and she loved when I gave her a "fur-cut"! She liked people, but only once she got to know them.

Things Kitty did not like: ANY other animals. She wanted to kill them all! I personally saw her scare away several dogs. Vacumn cleaners. Fireworks. Mark from Middlebury. Having to get in her travel cage. A new flea collar.

Kitty passed away after a short illness. She was aged 12 years or older. She is survived by her human family, myself & Jody of Vermont, Barry Snoots of Georgia, Cathy Snoots of Maryland and Jess Snoots of Texas. She will also be remembered by Jody's cats Jarvis (even though they couldn't stand each other!) and George (who never gave up his attempts to be her friend). She was my first cat, and my best friend, and will always be #1 with me.
